Few things are more terrifying than sinkholes. The idea that you could be snoozing in your bed, or strolling the golf course, or, as in the above video, walking along a street in Shenzhen, and suddenly be swallowed by the earth is enough to make anyone agoraphobic.
According to the Southern Metro Daily, a sinkhole opened up at a construction site in Shenzhen’s Futian district early Wednesday evening. The hole, over five metres (16.5ft) in diameter and four storeys deep, swallowed up and killed a 25 year old security guard working nearby. Though rescue workers were able to reach the man and bring him to a hospital, he later died of his injuries.
The local authorities assured residents that they weren’t at risk from the sinkhole but many in the area told reporters that they would be finding somewhere else to stay for the night. Maybe somewhere where the ground hadn’t just up and ate someone for no reason.
