Pencil This In is all the things you’d want to do this Monday through Thursday. New(ish) movies for the boring cinemas of Shanghai, Italian disco house extravaganza with Bottin at Lola, and… Fumiya Tanaka at the Shelter. Don’t miss that one, he’s nitroglycerine. Read on for all the details, or check out our calendar for more!
Die Hard 5 & Oz the Great and Powerful @ Shanghai Cinemas
Sometimes it takes moviemakers a surprisingly long time to realize:
a) all their new ideas are shit
b) some old franchise is still popular
c) it’s not a good idea to wait another 10 years to cast Bruce Willis as an action hero again.
The result ‘A Good Day to Die Hard‘ is crap (or so I’ve been told) but I’m confident it still bears some entertainment value.
If you have your doubts whether that’s a good investment of your money, you can also get tickets for Disney’s newest fiddling with the Wizard of Oz. ‘Oz the Great and Powerful‘ opens on the big 3D screens of Shanghai today.
Sub-Cinema: Phenomena @ DADA
Another bizarre work from Italian horror legend Dario Argento. “A young girl, with an amazing ability to communicate with insects, is transferred to an exclusive Swiss boarding school, where her unusual capability might help solve a string of murders.” (IMDb). Sounds a bit silly, is a bit silly (like most of his movies), yet well worth seeing for its artistic direction and soundtrack.
Free // Doors at 8pm, movie at 9pm // Dada // No. 115 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu (幸福路115号, 近法华镇路)
Fumiya Tanaka @ The Shelter
If you like minimal techno, then you’ve already got a plan for Wednesday night. I’ve had the pleasure to see DJ/Producer Fumiya Tanaka live in Berlin a couple of years ago and can strongly recommend this gig. Driving minimal beats as sharp as a Japanese kitchen knife cutting sashimi, Tanaka is one of those DJs who make you forget time and when you check your phone again you realize that you were supposed to leave several few hours earlier.
100RMB presale, 120RMB door // 10pm // The Shelter // No. 5 Yongfu Lu, near Fuxing Xi Lu (永福路5号, 近复兴西路)
TICT: Bottin @ LOLA
Freshly imported from Venice comes Bottin for a DJ set at LOLA’s Holy Sh*t party. Bouncy house tunes with a good beat, seasoned with Italo disco, Giallo traumas (Goblin soundtracks), 70’s trash and a good dose of undeniable coolness. Not bad, that guy. Check Soundcloud.
50RMB // 10pm // 570 Yongjia Lu, Bldg. 4, near Yueyang Lu (永嘉路570号4号楼, 近岳阳路)
