Starting on April 1, Shanghai will raise its minimum monthly wage to 1,650 yuan, according to the Shanghai Daily. The 1,650 yuan figure reflects an increase from the previous 1,450 yuan amount – a 200 yuan difference the Shanghai Daily for some reason reports as a 170 yuan increase.
Additionally, the minimum hourly wage will increase from 12.5 yuan to 14 yuan per hour.
“After the adjustment, minimum wages in the city will still top those of other provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions,” said the Shanghai Daily.
Despite the date of these proposed changes, it is almost certain that the news is not an April Fool’s joke.
