Police in Shanghai arrested over 30 people in a raid Wednesday on six brothels operating across the road from a middle school, reports the Shanghai Daily.
The brothels, or, as the Shanghai Daily rather charmingly insists on calling them: ‘massage parlours’, were situated less than 10 metres from the entrance to Pujiang No 2 Middle School. According to the Daily “many students have to pass by the businesses on their way to and from the school”. Gosh.
An undercover reporter from Eastday.com visited one of the brothels (the tough life of a journalist) and said a woman there said she would charge him 100 yuan to have sex with her, 50 yuan extra if he didn’t want to wear a condom. Ironically, the woman reportedly told her fake client that: “Police have never checked here and they never will.”
All the six massage parlors were closed for illegal and unlicensed operations while their landlords were fined for leasing the space. Four people, including two men and two women, were caught on the scene engaging in sexual activities, the official said.
Police said they would patrol the area around the clock in the coming two weeks to ensure that the massage parlors would not reopen, the official said.
According to Chinese law, entertainment venues and Internet cafes are not allowed to open around elementary or middle schools.
Prostitution is illegal in China but broadly tolerated by authorities. Intermittent crackdowns have previously nabbed such hardened criminals as a 91 year old grandfather and a number of transgendered women in Nanning. Ethnographer and sociologist Tricia Wang, who has written extensively on the subject, says Chinese brothels can be put into one of six broad categories:
1. super high end brothel (10,000RMB and up)
2. the mayor’s brothel ( based off of conversations I estimate it to be around several thousand RMB)
3. the policeman’s brothel ( based off of conversations I estimate it to be around 200-1000RMB)
4. the business person’s (200-1000RMB)
5. the citizen’s brothels (5-100RMB)
6. street walkers who charge aound 20-50RMB – client pays for hotel
Can you guess which ones get raided by the police, and which ones don’t?
