Wen Yanxia (middle, insert)
Well this is depressing. A four year old girl born in the wake of the 8.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Wenchuan, Sichuan province, in 2008, has been killed in the Yaan quake.
Wen Yanxia was struck by falling debris as her family rushed out of their house in Lushan county on Saturday. She was immediately taken to a hospital in Yaan, but later died of her injuries, according to Chinese media.
“At first we thought if she could manage to survive the [Wenchuan] earthquake, she would be blessed her entire life. But she did not escape the catastrophe after all,” her mother said, recalling how Yanxia loved drawing and dancing.
Wang Hongwu, the girl’s father, said he had to hide photos of Yanxia from his wife so they did not sadden her. The mother has been weeping every day since the tragedy.
Wen was born on May 13, 2008, via caesarean amid continual aftershocks from the Wenchuan earthquake which claimed more than 88,000 lives.
