Farmer’s Market: On Sunday, May 19, Shanghai Centre is hosting the 2013 May Farmer’s market, a gourmet food bonanza featuring organic fruits and vegetables, imported organic honey, fresh-baked specialty breads and cookies, and more! The event will be repeated on the third Sunday of each month, excluding July and August, for the remainder of the year.

The Friday Muslim Market has closed!!!!: We regret to inform you that the Friday Muslim market, one of our favorite Shanghai institutions, has closed down due to so-called “excessive smoke pollution.” This marks the first phase of the upcoming restrictions on outdoor grilling. Because as we all know, the pollution problem doesn’t stem from the myriad cars and factory emissions, it’s obviously due to a couple guys grilling meat kebabs on the corner. You can get the full skinny here, but ultimately this is another snip in the cultural lobotomization of Shanghai, which saw the dismantlement of the famous Cao’an wet market a couple months back, and Wujiang Lu before that.
