Construction on Beijing Wonderland Amusement Park, which was intended to be Asia’s largest amusement park, halted in 1998. Now, 15 years later, the park has been demolished.
Despite its abandonment and half-finished state, the fairytale castles (which took on an apocalyptic sheen after a few years of desertion) still attracted throngs of visitors every year, and numerous photojournalists.
Demolition began on April 20 and most buildings have been levelled, with only foundations remaining to remove.
A spokesperson for Reignwood Group, which owns the failed park, said it plans to build a “comprehensive luxury product supermarket”, because Beijing doesn’t have enough supermarkets.
