In what must be an empowering piece of news for protesters in Kunming, Shanghai’s own nimby demonstration was hugely successful. Protests against a planned battery factory in Shanghai’s Songjiang district have lead to it being scrapped.
Investment in the proposed factory was canceled and the land will be given back to the local government, People’s Daily reports.
The retraction comes after a series of three protests by local residents, with the most recent taking place on May 11. Another protest had been planned for this weekend.
One Weibo user said in response to the news:
The people of Songjiang defended their and future generations’ living environment by relying on themselves. *thumbs up emoticon*
The company responsible for the project is Shanghai Guoxuan New Energy, a subsidiary of Hefei Guoxuan High-tech Power Energy Co Ltd.
