A Belgian pigeon named Bolt has become the most expensive racing bird in the world after he was purchased for $400,000 by a Chinese businessman.
According to the AP, Bolt (named after Usain, of course) beat the previous holder of the most-expensive-bird title by $78,000.
Once in China, Bolt will retire from racing and instead focus on his new job: sex. Bolt will be used to breed the next generation of elite racing pigeons.
Pigeon racing was apparently once a big deal in Belgium. Alas, according to the AP “in the 21st century, breeding pigeons is hardly sexy for today’s European youngsters and Belgian fanciers have almost fallen ten-fold to some 27,000”.
