Peng Liyuan, the Beyoncé of China, has had her position alongside Queen Bey confirmed with a place on Forbes list of the World’s Most Powerful Female Celebrities.
Forbes, a once quality business magazine that increasingly spends its time publishing page view grabbing listicles, says of Peng:
A newcomer to our list is current Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan. Peng is the glamorous second wife of China’s newly-installed president Xi Jinping. After joining the People’s Liberation Army at 18, she found fame as a folk singer, later performing in operas and appearing in television specials. It’s often joked that she’s more famous than her husband: “Who is Xi Jinping? He is Peng Liyuan’s husband.” Since her husband’s rise in politics, she’s taken a step back from performing, but has emerged as a fashion icon and trendsetter, earning comparisons to Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton. During Xi’s first presidential trip abroad to Russia and Africa in March, Peng was by his side. The hope is that the first lady’s star power will help to improve China’s image abroad and put a human face on the Communist regime.
Peng’s rank (#54) puts her alongside such luminaries as 2010 World Cup songstress Shakira (#52) and daytime talk show host Ellen Degeneres (#51).
