In March, Zhou Xixun from Jiling province stole an SUV which was parked outside a supermarket, and found a two-month old baby named Xu Haobo in the back seat. He strangled the baby and buried its remains in the snow on a country road.
Changchun Intermediate People’s Court has sentenced Zhou to death, Sina News reports. He was also fined 50,000 yuan and ordered to pay Xu’s family 17,098.5 yuan in compensation.
The horrific story first broke on March 4 when both the car and baby were reported missing, triggering a city-wide manhunt. One day later, the stolen Toyota was discovered outside an elementary school in Yongfa township, and the child was found buried in the snow. Zhou Xixun was named as a murder suspect and confessed soon after, he was officially arrested on March 7.
Zhou is planning to appeal the court’s decision.
