Raging asshole and mayor of Osaka Toru Hashimoto has apologised for his recent comments about the ‘necessity’ of ‘comfort women’ for soldiers, kind of.
In remarks given at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan, Hashimoto apologised for implying that US marines based in Japan should take advantage of the domestic sex industry to stop them going around raping people.
Hashimoto doubled down however on his previous assertion that ‘comfort women’ – mostly Chinese and Korean women forced into sexual slavery – were “necessary” for Japanese soldiers during WWII.
I stated that ‘the armed forces of nations in the world’ seemed to have needed women ‘during the past wars.’ Then it was wrongly reported that I myself thought it as necessary for armed forces to use women and that ‘I’ tolerated it.
According to the FT, Hashimoto’s political party, Restoration, has been plummeting in the polls, in part due to its leader’s gaffes and general dickbaggery.
Some in Japan see Mr Hashimoto’s provocations as a deliberate attempt to rekindle enthusiasm for his cause – an attempt that went too far and backfired. A lawyer who first gained public attention as a sharp-tongued television commentator, he has built his career on a rare and often bracing contrarianism and may have overestimated the public’s appetite for attacks on what he sees as suffocating political correctness.
Japan’s prime minister Shinzo Abe has benefited from Restoration’s collapse in support, but has rather a shaky record himself of making hugely offensive statements about the country’s history during the second world war.
