Residents all over Shanghai have complained of masses of termites in their houses, office buildings, and apartments.
‘Shanghai Termites‘ is currently trending on Weibo as city residents share horror stories and strategies for getting rid of the little pests.
Shanghai News recommends using a simple termite trap made out of a bulb and bowl of water. The heat and light attracts the termites which then fall into the water and drown.
The Shanghai Daily collected the appalled reactions of residents who were overwhelmed by termites:
“Hundreds of termites swarmed into my office yesterday. It was awful,” claimed Shan Xiaoming on Weibo.
“Termites are so horrible! They can fly as high as 31st floor to enter my room,” said Wang Qian, a 25-year-old living in a new high-rise apartment in Baoshan District. Wang said she faced termite problem when she lived in her old house, which was built in the 1950s, but she had no idea they would show up in her newly decorated apartment as well.
Perhaps people wouldn’t be so grossed out by the termites if they were as cute as these tiny, tiny spiders discovered in Sichuan.
Hot, humid weather like the city has been experiencing in recent weeks is ideal for termite breeding, and the authorities warn that there will be more termites next month. The city has set up a hotline for anyone who needs help with termites: 962121.
