An unidentified woman attempted to kill herself by hanging in an aeroplane bathroom on a Beijing-bound United Airlines flight out of Chicago, Beijing News reports.
On Weibo, several passengers on flight UA851 reported that the plane was diverted to Alaska after a woman hanged herself in the on-board bathroom. United Airlines later confirmed to the Beijing Times that passengers were transferred to San Francisco where the airline had arranged for another plane to take them to Beijing.
“Unbelievable, we were flying UA851 over the North Pole when there was an emergency, economy class passenger hanged herself in the bathroom but was rescued, we were returned to Alaska for emergency landing” @想要拥有姜Gary wrote on Weibo.
Another Weibo user, @驿路寄梅花 described the woman as being of Asian heritage and around 40 years old. He later added:
A few points to clarify: First, I wasn’t sure whether the woman attempted suicide although my seat was near the toilet. I didn’t know something went wrong before the cabin crew called for doctors. She did seem abnormal though. When we landed, she was taken off the plane while constantly shouting.
United Airlines confirmed that the flight was diverted due to a suicide attempt, but would not comment on the matter further.
