An American scientist who has been prevented from leaving China for 5 years during a legal dispute has returned to his family in the US, according to the AP.
In 2008, Hu Zhicheng was accused by a competitor of stealing state secrets and imprisoned for a year and half. The charges were eventually dropped, but Hu was prevented from leaving the country. His accuser had filed a civil case for patent infringement, and Hu was forced to stay in China while the case was ongoing. The years passed, and the case was neither brought to trial, nor dismissed, leaving Hu in limbo.
Hong Li, the wife of Hu Zhicheng, the engineer and businessman, told the AP that her husband returned to the US on Monday.
Hong said she doesn’t know why her husband was allowed to leave.
