Four people, including two children, were killed when an alcohol and tobacco shop was set ablaze in an arson related incident in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province last week.
Local police have identified the motive for the arson as an attempt by the landlord to drive away the tenants from the building. The current tenant and owner of the store Chen Hanquan, his wife, his younger brother and his two sons (aged 8 and 5) were present when the fire started. Chen was the only one to survive the blaze as the rest of his family were unfortunately killed in this incident.
The landlord’s poorly thought out plan to regain possession of the premises went horribly wrong. He had wished to rebuild the residence where Chen and his family lived and worked, however Chen refused to leave as the rental contract had not expired. After a failed attempt to drive the family out by trashing the store two days earlier, the landlord reportedly hired five people to set fire to the building. The fire was started in the morning, giving the family little time to escape.
Police have arrested nine suspects.
