Infographic: Chongqing girls are cheapest to marry, Shanghai women most expensive

Chongqing women are the cheapest to marry, according to a tongue-in-cheek infographic released on Weibo this week by two Chongqing real estate companies.

Provinces are ranked into zones according to the value of betrothal gifts expected from the husband's side of the family, ranging from zero to one million yuan. Shanghai ranks in the latter, with average gift values starting from 100,000 yuan plus a house or a flat. Surprisingly, the data lists Chongqing as the only province in the 'zero yuan' category. A flurry of excitement ensued, as men clamoured to ditch their Shanghai girlfriends in favour of a woman from Chongqing.

Even those who were already committed in a marriage still had hope. @幸运的新新 said on Weibo, "In my next life I will find a Chongqing wife. They're free!"

This infographic is probably not the most scientific study ever, but it sure is one hell of a marketing campaign for Chongqing. The emphasis isn't really on betrothal gifts or wedding gifts, but rather on the attractiveness of Chongqing women and by extension the attractiveness of the city as a whole. The official Weibo of Leju Chongqing, one of the real estate companies responsible for creating the image said, "This [campaign] is a perfect fusion of of creativity and Weibo, and we are very proud!"
