Seven families filed formal accusations against an American kindergarten teacher on Thursday, alleging sexual abuse and rape of both male and female students, according to the SCMP.
Shockingly, the news comes not too long after a similar sexual abuse case involving an American teacher who was also teaching at the private school in Shanghai. It is reported that the two were friends, but no link has yet been made.
The school, a private institution contracted by a French government body, declined to elaborate on the nature of the accusations; a notice addressed to families referred only to ‘sexual assaults’.
“The investigation is being carried out by the Chinese police and is ongoing. The teacher has been in administrative detention since his arrest,” they added.
“My daughter was having nervous breakdowns, she was scratching herself on her face and thighs,” one parent said.
“As we had just arrived in China I figured it was exhaustion from moving countries, I didn’t worry about it,” she said, adding that only later did she link the unusual behaviour to abuse.
According to another parent, cases of abuse of children go back as far as five years. She also suspects that her own daughter, too, has been abused over a period of months.
“We are living a nightmare,” she said.
The second teacher was working at both the French and German schools, which share a campus together. The two campuses have 1,600 students, ranging in age from three to 18.
The school implied that there was no link between the two cases, claiming that the alleged actions of the second teacher took place once he had left the school, in a private individual teaching class.
“The French school wants us to believe that there is absolutely no link between these two incidents, except that the two people, while they were working together, were friends.”
Shanghai police declined to comment on the cases. The US consulate in the city also declined to comment.
Micro-bloggers however, were quick to respond.
@吴法天: “So a foreigner commits a crime in China, and yet the foreign press is first to report it. What of the Chinese media?”
The news comes after a flurry of similar horrific child rape cases by Chinese teachers and officials, and just in time for the new, harsher sentencing for child abusers in China. In April, British teacher Neil Robinson who was wanted by the UK police in connection with the distribution of indecent images of children and the rape of a child was arrested in Beijing.
