Police have identified a man suspected of setting fire to a bus in Xiamen, leaving 47 dead and 34 hospitalized according to Xinhua. The suspect is said to be a petitioner who self-immolated as protest, according to a Weibo post by a local reporter.
The reporter, Liu Xiangnan, identified the suspect as Chen Shui, who petitioned the government many times over an error in his household registration that prevented him from receiving his social security benefits.
It is not yet clear whether Chen survived the fire.
Police ruled out accidental cause to the fire when gasoline was discovered to be the accelerant, though the bus ran on a diesel engine. The fuel tank of the bus was intact after the fire.
The fire began during the height of rush hour on Friday evening. 90 passengers were on the express bus, which was part of the Bus Rapid Transit in Xiamen.
Update 20.30 CST: The arsonist died in the blaze, according to the Xiamen city government.
