There’s a reason only drug dealers and gangsters store money in their houses. Unless you have a very good reason to keep the existence of your money secret, banks are a much safer place to store it than a mattress.
A Guangdong woman was horrified to discover that termites had gotten into a 400,000 yuan pile of money she was keeping in her home in Shunde, according to the Guangzhou Daily.
The woman was given the money by her children around six months ago. Rather than deposit the money in a bank, she wrapped it in plastic and stored it in a draw. She didn’t notice the damage done by the insects until this April.
Fortunately for the woman, generous bank staff spent an entire day scanning and manually counting the remaining cash. Almost 340,000 yuan was identified, a loss of 60,000 yuan to the woman.
This month, a Shanghai couple accidentally gave away one million yuan’s worth of cash when the wife mistook the piles of money for waste paper. Luckily for them, the money was returned by a conscientious recycling collector. Less lucky was a Nanjing woman who aired a quilt her husband had been covertly storing 15,000 yuan, the couple only retrieved two-thirds of their cash.
