At the 2013 World Wine Queen China beauty pageant in Guangzhou (which is apparently a thing), Peking University student Yuan Jiayi was crowned champion, becoming the first Chinese wine queen. Yuan will represent China in the September 2013 World Wine Queens global final.
Yuan’s victory is currently trending on Weibo, where netizens are comparing her unfavourably to fellow contestant (and loser) Zhang Zetian of Tsinghua University. Zhang’s “natural” beauty found more favour with netizens, who complained that Yuan looked like a “club girl”, because what’s a beauty pageant without a dash of extra misogyny?
It’s unclear what the duties of a World Wine Queen (China) entail, other than, presumably, bossing Debra Master of Wine around.
