An absurd amount of seaweed washed up on the shores of a beach in Rizhao, Shandong, transforming the popular tourist spot into a beautiful, thick green mess.
The pile of seaweed began growing on Saturday as waves continually pushed them onto the shore. Fortunately for residents, enteromorpha, also known as sea lettuce, is a completely edible food source rich in magnesium and many other nutrients.
Unlike the pollution that has caused discoloration in some of China’s rivers and waterways, this green beach is a natural phenomenon of little concern. A prompt cleanup of the sea florae is necessary however, as eventually it will decompose and could emit fumes that are harmful to humans.
Qingdao is the next stop on the enteromorpha China tour, as tidal currents are predicted to soon bring a similar amount of sea lettuce to the city.
