A seven day old baby was rushed to intensive care after a nurse at Guangzhou Development District Hospital accidentally gave her rice wine, according to the Southern Metro Daily.
The incident took place on the evening of June 6. The nurse wanted to give the baby some milk, seeing a bottle of clear liquid on the bedside table she mixed it with milk powder and fed it to the baby.
After the baby managed to drink the baijiu-milk-powder cocktail, she began vomiting and her face turned red. She was rushed to intensive care where she remained for two days. She has since been discharged and doctors say that fortunately, no permanent damage was done.
The nurse is currently suspended as an investigation is carried out, she has apologised for her mistake and really, who could guess that feeding a newborn baby some random liquid you found laying around without smelling or tasting it would be a bad idea?
The hospital, eager not to seem like alcoholic central, pointed out that the baijiu in question was most likely rubbing alcohol used for treating various ailments, not a doctor or nurse’s secret stash.
Netizens understandably excoriated the hospital and the nurse for the mistake. One said that the smell of baijiu is so strong that the nurse herself must have been drunk not to notice what she was mixing the milk powder with.
