According to posts circulated on Weibo, a former People’s Liberation Army officer was begging on the streets of Guangzhou, until he was driven away by police.
The images show a man wearing military uniform kneeling on the pavement, kowtowing repeatedly and begging for money. In front of him is a sign which reads, “I am a retired military officer, and I came here to look for work, but I couldn’t find anything. Now I want to go home, but I’ve lost my wallet. I am here begging for a 280 yuan ticket home.”
Police arrived soon after and ushered the ex-officer away.
Some netizens claim that this is a well-known tactic employed by savvy beggars in Guangzhou, but others are more inclined to believe his story. Regardless of the man’s true identity, netizens are unimpressed by the way the local police dealt with the situation. But hey, things could be worst; at least it wasn’t the chengguan who made an appearance this time.
