A China Eastern Airlines plane from Huai’an to Shanghai Hongqiao ran off the runway on Wednesday when it landed during torrential rain, Shanghai Daily reports.
The plane, which had 44 passengers on board was landing around 5:25pm. According to witnesses, the front undercarriage of the plane broke immediately on impact.
“A strong downdraft during the rainstorm when the jet about to land most probably caused the accident,” a spokesperson from the airline said.
Strong winds also caused the sinking of five ships at the mouth of the Yangtze river. One sailor is still missing.
A village in Jinshan District recorded 90 millimeters of rain over a 24-hour period.
Shanghai residents can expect frequent showers over the next few days, forecasters said, with occasional thunder today and tomorrow and daily rainfall of between 40 and 60 millimeters.
Around 1,500 families lost power for more than two hours last night because of the bad weather.
