Early on Saturday six Chinese oenology students were “violently attacked” in the Bordeaux region of France in what the interior ministry called an act of xenophobia, SCMP reports.
The culprits were three visibly drunk men, two of whom are in custody. They went to the residence of the students, and the student who opened the door was first attacked. As the students tried to push the assailants out, one female student was hit in the face by a thrown bottle.
Sud Ouest reported that the girl was the daughter of a Chinese political figure.
“I cannot confirm the name, but it is someone who has now retired, having been the mayor of a big city,” said Georges Jousserand, who heads the school where the six Chinese students studied.
This attack came on the tail of recent assaults of Chinese tourists in Paris. While French officials condemned the attack and said it would do everything it could to find the perpetrators, France was slammed on Sina Weibo by Chinese netizens.
“This is too far for the French people. My impression of France used to be quite good, but now its damaged,” said one user.
