BENOIT & SERGIO
Background and credentials
On first hearing DJs Benoit & Sergio, they sounded a little less soulless than most other electronic dance tracks. Further research on their lyrics confirmed these preliminary listens. Formed only a few years ago, Sergio embarked on this musical project after his dad was diagnosed with cancer. In a bid to expel the dreaded, ‘what-if‘ feeling, he quit his job as a prep school teacher, moved to Europe and started making music with his pal, Benoit.
What they sound like
Mike ‘Sergio’ Myers’ vocals have that crackled hoarse throaty texture that echoes around the periphery of their electronic-house basslines. The direction of their songs is to make these dark, mantric statements come together their electronic antithetic counterparts. The result is a very claustrophobically atmospheric quality.
The lyric, “so many nooses around my neck, as I stare at the sea waiting for new ships”, can be found on their most recently released EP, ‘New Ships’ and probably (hopefully) in their DJ set at Lola on Saturday.
As for the rest of the weekend
On Thursday arrives the peculiar sounding, Mongolian musician, Delehei. Right at the same time, Chick Corea, winner of 20 Grammys and a nominee of 59, will be showing everybody at JZ Club that, he’s… not bad at playing the piano.
Every Saturday night there are a lot of bands, and a lot of record labels, and a lot of wild silly names of events being thrown about. But let me save you some time. Dick around till 11pm, then head to Lola. Easy.
Sunday will be seeing a lot of ‘Fête de la Musique’ events.
