Guangdong Province is leading the nation in syphilis rates, especially among pregnant women, according to a report by the Nandu Daily. One in every 2,000 Guangdong Ren test positive for the brain-eating STD, and the figure jumps to 1 in 200 for pregnant women (particularly troubling as the disease can be passed to unborn children).
Southern-region news website The Nanfang reports:
Last year, 53,043 people were diagnosed with syphilis in the province. Zhejiang was in second place with 35,194. The province also saw 1,662 infants diagnosed with syphilis. According to Yang Ligang, director of Guangdong’s STD Prevention Centre, 75% of cases in the province were in the age groups of 20-45 and 60 and above.
