This week’s music calendar is fairly choc-a-bloc with DJ’s so this post is a run down review of the ones worth attending. Oh and by the way, Limp Bizkit and Jamiroquai are confirmed for Sonic Shanghai and will be added to the now excitingly extensive list of international names coming next month.
SUNDAY: TFVSJS @ On Stage
Bio and Credentials
Tfvsjs has clocked up 10 years of experience and are celebrating their decade long existence with a nationwide tour, hitting Red Town’s On Stage on Sunday. This Hong Kong based band has seen plenty of additional and replacement band members, but are finally settled on Adonian Chan and Milk Tsang on guitars, Sean Pang on bass, and Chapman So and Antonio Fung on drums.
Pretentious description of their “sound”
Their music sounds like a stream of consciousness, that is experienced through a cacophony of bass, guitar and drum. The sounds are dissonant and sometimes arhythmical; it works, but is perhaps something of an acquired taste. There is an extraordinary connection between the band members, each complementing or riffing off the others with seemingly little pause or consideration, but pushing through the songs with the single mindedness usually only paralleled by a one man band.
70RMB // 20:00-22:00 // A2, Lane 570, Huaihai Xi Lu, near Hongqiao Lu 淮海西路570弄A2, 近虹桥
TONIGHT: Tiger Skin @ Lola
NOT the kind of house music that will cause you to have multiple aneurysms and a permanent irregular heartbeat. Lovely, meditative deep house.
50RMB // late-later // Surpass Court, Bldg 4, 570 Yongjia Lu, near Yueyang Lu 永嘉路570号4号楼, 近岳阳路
FRIDAY: The Shanghai Newgrass Project @ The Wooden Box
Bluegrass, with a hint of traditional Mongolian colours. Mandolin player, Tom, can throat sing like a bad ass, makes you feel like you’ve been transported to some sort of Shayman-organised coming of age ceremony. Top pick for Friday.
No cover // TBA: Kind of late-later // 9 Qinghai Lu, near Nanjing Xi Lu 青海路9号, 近南京西路
FRIDAY: DJ Yang Bing @ Lune
This one is a firecracker. Who knows what kind of beats he’s going to lay down. His slower and more melodic tracks are pretty damn tuneful, although I am less of a fan of his boomps boomps boomps sets. He’ll be sharing the show with DJ Kaize this Friday.
40RMB // late-later // 4F, 218 Xinle Lu, corner of Donghu Lu 新乐路218号, 东湖路路口 // Entry includes one free shot.
FRIDAY: Metastaz @ The Shelter
Bassful dubstep, with the occasional touch of Arabic string melodies. From what little I could listen to, their tunes are dark and atmospheric but with little overall flow. I don’t get them, although 927 Metastaz SoundCloud followers would probably disagree with me.
40RMB // 22:00-late // Basement of 5 Yongfu Lu, near Fuxing Xi Lu 永福路5号, 近复兴西路
SATURDAY: Acid Pony Club @ Dada
Stuttering funk set to a metronomic electro rhythm. When APC is not just scratching and splicing mix-tapes like a veteran, his techno songs are fairly addictive. Each song’s original elements move around the various movements quite well. Generally speaking, APC’s tunes are pretty great fun to boogie on down. (Yes. I did just say that)
