In perhaps one of the most tragically coincidental events in Chinese history, last Sunday a Shandong man nearly killed his own father in a hit and run collision.
A man surnamed Li was driving a van in the early morning when he hit a man on a scooter. Li left the scene without checking to see if the man was injured, calling for help, or even apologizing. Li rushed to an auto body repair shop in an attempt to hide evidence of the incident, but the police were quickly able to link him to the crime.
After some questioning, Li discovered that he had hit-and-run his own father. This realization prompted the police to graciously let him go home to take care of his injured father. Apparently the police were feeling especially sympathetic that day, as they also opted to not tell Li’s father that it was son who had hit him, as they felt that this knowledge of this would seriously damage the relationship between the two.
Nevertheless, Li will still face charges for this severe traffic violation. Whether or not Li will hide all of this from his father is unknown (the dad is, hopefully, a Shanghaiist reader), but the young Li will hopefully have learned not be so callous, because you never know who it is you are leaving to die in the street after you hit them with your van.
