Wang Fengjun, who at 2.55 metres tall may be Asia’s tallest man, has been taken to hospital for a hip replacement, AFP reports.
Wang, who is 29cm taller than former China international and NBA star Yao Ming, developed gigantism due to a tumour on his pituitary gland. He also suffers from avascular necrosis (cell death in the bones) of the hips. A Henan hospital is performing the hip replacement surgery free of charge.
We reported in October 2012 on Wang Qiang, a 2.26 metre high homeless man in Foshan who was reduced to using his giant frame as a walking billboard.
The world’s tallest woman, Yao Defen, also from China, died in December 2012. She was 40.
