A newspaper in Shandong was shut down on Friday over allegations it had printed “vulgar content”, SCMP reports.
Qu Quancheng, deputy editor of the Blue Express Daily, dismissed the claims, saying they were “made up accusations” by local competitors.
Editor-in-Chief Han Hao told the South China Morning Post on Friday that he believed a local competitor had gone to authorities and attacked the paper for running inappropriate pictures of “pretty women”, which Han said were celebrity photos that appeared in the entertainment news.
The Blue Express Daily is a paper with a circulation of 60,000 and only started publishing in July of last year.
The paper published its final goodbye on Friday along with a poem called Maybe, by contemporary Chinese poet Shu Ting.
A search on Weibo does turn up alleged photos of semi-nude women from the Blue Express Daily. However, we would direct your attention to government mouthpiece Xinhua’s numerous slideshows of scantily-clad women in their underwear.
