Heavy rains in Sichuan province have led to severe flooding which has so far displaced almost 17,000 people. The above video shows the horrific power of the floodwater as it literally washes everything in its path, including houses and their unfortunate occupants.
“It is the biggest rainstorm in 50 years in the county. The deepest water in the ruins is 7 meters. The rainstorm has affected 15 townships and 42,571 people in Beichuan. While the county has evacuated 2,019 residents as a precaution, one person is missing, many roads and bridges have been damaged, and power and telecommunication facilities have been cut off. Direct economic losses have surpassed 88 million yuan ($14 million),” said Wang Shoulei, an information officer in Beichuan.
Firefighters were able to rescue three men after a bridge over the Shiting river collapsed under the force of the surging floodwaters.
Firefighters attached a wire to an excavator and the men were able to cross hand-over-hand 100ft above the river.
Three people were also pulled from a river when a bridge collapsed in the mountainous region.
One car, three minivans and an SUV fell into the river in Jiangyou when the Qinglian bridge broke apart and collapsed.
The two-lane bridge was built in 1969 and a replacement span was under construction.
