Shanghai police say they have identified a man photographed riding Metro Line 9 with a replica gun, Eastday.com reports.
The Weibo user who uploaded the initial photo said the man was pointing the gun at other passengers, including the photographer, and many didn’t realise it was only a replica when he accidentally discharged it and only a toy bullet was fired. (The user seems to have deleted their original tweets but they are still available to see as forwarded by others.)
A reporter for Eastday.com contacted the police who confirmed that while a toy/replica gun was not a controlled item (and illegal in its own right) bringing a realistic replica into a public place where it might be used to scare other people or otherwise cause a disturbance is illegal. If caught, the man faces a hefty fine and potentially prison time.
