China’s embassy to the US in Washington DC was graffitied this week. Voice of America reports that 拆 (chāi, demolish/dismantle) was sprayed on the two pillars of the embassy’s front gate, and on the entrance to an office building.
The vandalism was discovered on Wednesday morning, just as leaders from China and the US were gathering at the fifth annual Strategic and Economic Dialogue between the two countries. The meeting was co-chaired by Chinese vice premier Wang Yang, who made headlines when he cracked a joke about marriage equality in the US.
While no one has claimed responsibility for tagging the embassy, Initiatives for China are crowing the loudest, their founder Yang Jianli, told Voice of America, “People widely believe the graffiti on the Chinese embassy in the US is in support of the Sparrow Initiative.”
