A Nanjing man who was caught after stealing over 800 books told police he was trying to “comprehend the meaning of life”, Xinhua reports.
When a book shop owner noticed that a large amount of highbrow material was disappearing from his store, including social science, history, and poetry books, he contacted police who sent a plainclothes officer to keep watch for the thief.
Police observed one young man who would often come to the shop on an e-bike with plenty of storage space, leaving with several books every time. When they questioned the man, surnamed Li, he admitted to have been swiping books from the store since February.
Li stole over 800 books before he was caught, often hitting the book shop several times a week. A prolific reader as well as a thief, Li would sell on the books after he was done.
The thief attempted to present himself as a modern day Confucius, saying he was reading so many books in order to “comprehend the meaning of life”.
