IB Times reports that a stabbing near Chaoyang Joy City mall in Beijing has left two dead. The attack, which occurred on July 17 at 5:00pm, was allegedly carried out by a 27 year old Shandong man surnamed Xiao, reported to be mentally ill.
The victims, a man and a woman who have not yet been identified, reportedly succumbed to their wounds almost immediately. One victim is believed to be a Chinese citizen, the other a foreign national. Reasons for the attack are not clear at this time.
Beijing Cream shared a video of the Xiao being apprehended by the police (the confrontation starts near the 2:00 mark)”
Knife attacks are becoming increasingly frequent in China. Some of the attacks include the gruesome dismemberment of victims in public areas, while tragic school rampages leave the nation shocked and worried.
China’s strict gun control has helped keep the death toll of these attacks relatively low, however a abysmal lack of mental health services may be the underlying cause of these attacks.
