You may have noticed from walking around this fair city that Shanghai is rather hot at the moment. The breeze, for example, feels like someone is pointing a massive hair dryer in your face with the intention of slowly cooking you.
Parts of the Pudong New Area, already a hellish dystopia only fit for retreating to in case of zombie apocalypse, recorded temperatures in excess of 41 degrees celsius.
While photos on Weibo showed a giant thermometer on Nanjing road reading a temperature of 42 degrees, the official high for downtown Shanghai on Wednesday was 38.6 degrees. Lest you think this is government trickery to cheat you out of your hot weather bonus, the official high at the Huanglou Observatory in Pudong was 41.9 degrees (basically the same temperature as the surface of the sun).
It was 39 degrees for much of Shanghai on Thursday, but temperatures are expected to drop over the weekend.
Shanghai, I love you but you’re burning me alive.
