China’s loathed chengguan, untrained thugs responsible for enforcing city bylaws and policing petty crime, may have gone too far this time. Images uploaded to Weibo show a real policeman being attacked by a group of the jumped-up security guards in Qinghai on Tuesday.
Ren Jie, a policeman in Xining, the provincial capital, suffered injuries to his head when a group of chengguan beat him with his own police baton on Tuesday.
Local police in Beicheng district had received an emergency call reporting that a group of chengguan were assaulting people. Ren Jie took decided to investigate and found a group of chengguan trying to forcefully clear a flower plantation for demolition.
“If you didn’t wear this uniform today, we’d beat you to death,” Ren recalls being told by the chengguan mob. “When I was sitting in the ambulance, I couldn’t keep myself from crying.”
The case is being investigated by the relevant authorities .
The alleged murder of a watermelon seller by chengguan in Chenzhou, Henan province led to mass protests and hacking of government websites.
Beijing bomber Ji Zhongxing was allegedly crippled by chengguan in Dongguan. His case is currently being re-investigated following his explosive protest in Beijing airport.
