Dr Dre and his protege Kendrick Lamar were in Shanghai last Friday for a surprise (or at the very least, last minute) Beats by Dre promotional tour.
Beats apparently plans on opening a store in Shanghai in the near future, only the second such store in the world apart from the New York flagship. No word yet on when, where or how they plan to fight off stiff competition from all those street peddlers selling shanzhai Beats.
In what was originally billed as an invite-only VIP event, Dre and crew hosted a Beats afterparty at Cuvve – the same venue that hosted PSY back in February – generously open to any member of the public willing to drop 200 yuan. Dre didn’t perform (bummer), but to say that the mob-like crowd enjoyed the likes of Kendrick, DJ Wordy and DJ E-Feezy would be an understatement. Kendrick, the Compton-area newcomer of Swimming Pools and Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe fame, performed just three of his songs before calling it a night – he too must have realised how terrible a venue Cuvve was, especially given the critical mass of people staff had let in.
[EDIT]: Yes, that indeed is LeBron James making an appearance in the last two photos. He was only present for the Beats event in Beijing.
