Police in Henan province rescued a newborn baby on Sunday who was allegedly sold to human traffickers by an obstetrician, Xinhua reports.
DNA testing is being carried out on the infant to confirm its origin, but police believe it to be the same baby allegedly sold for 21,600 yuan by a doctor at Fuping County Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital in Shaanxi province.
The doctor, surnamed Zhang, allegedly told the child’s mother that the baby suffered from a congenital disease, persuading her to hand it over to his care for treatment. The woman later realised that Zhang had abducted her child.
Horrifyingly, since the event was in the news, four more families in Fuping have reported similar experiences to local police. Authorities are investigating if these families’ babies were also trafficked.
Living With Dead Hearts (previously), a documentary about child abduction and trafficking in China, is now available to watch online for free.
