University students in Huizhou dressed as zebras and danced at pedestrian crossings to spread awareness of the need for ‘civilised driving’, according to local traffic police.
Kevin McGeary of the Nanfang has translated the zebra’s song:
Let’s all get together and participate in this zebra activity
Remember that you stop at red lights and go at green lights
Respect traffic laws, safety is number 1
Raise your thumbs to show you agree
Zebra, zebra, zebra crossings
4+4 wait at zebra crossings
5+5 wait at zebra crossings
6+6 Oh, yeah!
Zebra crossing, I’m a zebra crossing
A raft of stricter traffic regulations came into effect on January 1 this year, with mixed results. In Shanghai, violators have been made to read newspapers to passersby as a form of public shaming (given the quality of some government-owned papers, reading them in private is punishment enough as well).
