Tencent’s WeChat messaging app, on which the Chinese population is becoming more and more dependent, just released a major update.
Version 5.0 adds a sticker shop – a much vaunted, currently in vogue monetization model – a game centre with 11 games, mobile payments, and speech recognition (if you speak Mandarin).
Another new feature is a scanner which can use your phone camera to recognise books, DVDs and other goods for sale. The app can also recognise English words and translate them into Chinese (hopefully this feature will work the opposite way soon as well) and return Soso Maps-powered street view if you point it at the wider world.
Download WeChat for iOS and Android.
