This is not a guide to art for dummies, it’s a guide to art written by a dummy.
Art of the Brick @ Superbrand Mall
Nathan Sawaya is a ‘Lego Artist’ whose Lego sculptures are currently on display in Lujiazui’s Superbrand Mall. The thing that struck me the most is that there is a nice balance between Lego art and art made out of Lego. What I mean by that, is this…
The first section was mainly Lego art; basically a bunch of things you can make out of Lego. As you go through the entrance gate, you’ll find a lego-ey homage to the Terracotta Warriors. It certainly resembles a Terracotta warrior so I guess it can’t be bad. Next section, some hands, a giraffe, a cello, some life-size humans and portraits of famous icons etc. It’s fairly impressive, but it’s not like similar things haven’t been done before.
The latter section of this exhibition offered a lot more food for thought. The reason being is that it’s not Lego art, it’s art that happens to have been made using Lego. Stuff that doesn’t just aim to impress, and would probably look nice even if it was made out of paper mache or something.
In the sculpture pictured above, he goes on about how being a lawyer made him feel like a red Lego man bursting from the belly of a suited Lego man (see above). It certainly looks powerful. This was the best piece, but even then it’s really not enough to inspire me to use pretentious art speak in this article, so I guess it can’t be that good. That pretty much seems to me to be the benchmark of “inspired” as far as I can see.
This exhibition was fairly fun to attend. Though I personally wouldn’t recommend forking out 50RMB to see it unless you have kids that are below 90cm in height who you think would benefit from seeing lots of different things you can do with Lego.
Nathan Sawaya’s Lego sculptures will be on exhibition in Shanghai till 27 October.
