It’s only the world’s second tallest building, so the Shanghai Tower’s designers had to choose a different category in which to be #1, and eventually settled on elevator speed. The tower’s lifts are designed by Mitsubishi and will be capable of travelling at 40 mph (64 km/h), surpassing the current reigning champion Taipei 101’s tortoise-like 60 km/h.
The elevators will be able to move from the ground floor to the top floor in one minute, at a rate of 18 meters per second. Whether this leads to rampant knee-buckling and/or projectile vomiting remains to be seen.
