Sophie Koh @ Yuyintang
This alternative/ indie pop princess has an incredibly sultry voice that pairs well with her whimsical reflections on love and life. It’s playful without being sickly and sexy without being Shakira. She has progressed somewhat from her enchantingly melodic, but electronically bare début album, ‘All the Pretty Boys’. The sound featured on her most recent album, ‘Oh My Garden’ released last year, really boasts her versatility as a vocalist.

Nosaj Thing @ Arkham
Nosaj Thing is the working name of LA based producer, Jason Chung. He has been in the business of listening to and liking music since he was a tyke. He was inspired by the hip-hop radio stations that his bus driver would play on the way to elementary school. From the age of twelve he learnt the basics of turn table DJing. His début was produced while he was working working shifts at a Guitar Centre, sneaking off to the gear rooms to perfect ‘Drift’.

Tanya Chua @ Shanghai Grand Stage
For a Saturday night option with 100% more emotional substance to Nosaj Thing, cheese afficianados should give Tanya Chua a bite. The Singaporean songstress’ 7th album, ‘If You See Him’ was one of the Top 10 Selling Mandarin Albums of the Year in the 2009 IFPI HK Album Sales Awards and last year she won the Best Female Vocalist Award for the third time.

Second Hand Rose @ The Mixing Room & Muse
Stage presence. This band has a lot of it. It might have something to do with front-man Lianglong’s predilection for a bit of on stage cross-dressing. Sensationalist? Perhaps. But there are a number of softer elements, including the North-eastern Chinese style of storytelling, ‘er ren zhuan’ which has been incorporated into their music as well as a Dongbei Suona player.

Metallica @ Mercedes-Benz Arena
Metal heads unite. For two nights ‘The Metal Band’, as they are so-called in Chinese, will be thrashing hard ‘… and (doing) Justice For All’ the idolatry of China’s extensive ‘Metallica’ fan-base.. before they ‘Kill ‘Em All and ‘Ride the Lightening’. ‘Master of Puppets’, the state censors, has pre-approved 35 songs for the band to work with.
