Statistically almost everyone who plays the lottery is wasting their money. A Shanghai man however, took wasting money on an infinitesimal chance of winning to the extreme, spending over six million yuan on lottery tickets.
According to the Shanghai Daily, the 46 year old, surnamed Xiao, sold apartments and cars worth six million yuan and ended up losing it all, because spending a ridiculous amount of money on the lottery still doesn’t mean you’ll ever win it.
At the peak of his addiction, the 46-year-old, surnamed Xiao, was spending 20,000 yuan a day.
“Over the past six years, I bought lottery tickets every day, spending at least 2,000 yuan to 3,000 yuan and up to 20,000 yuan in a single day,” a tearful Xiao told Shanghai Evening Post.
Xiao began selling his belongings in order to keep gambling. His wife divorced him in 2012, after being made sick by the stress of living with an addict.
Gambling is officially illegal in China (with the exception of Macau and limited betting opportunities in Hong Kong), but numerous underground rings exist, along with multiple lotteries, which is just gambling for people who like having the odds seriously stacked against them.
