You know how when you were ill as a kid you tried to persuade your parents that you should be able to eat nothing but ice cream and sweets because, duh, you’re ill, hello? A trio of burglars in Shanghai took that excuse to the extreme when they claimed they should be immune from punishment for their crimes because they are infected with tuberculosis.
Shanghai Daily reports that police had to wear protective masks while they interviewed the suspected criminals, who are alleged to have carried out over 100 burglaries.
The three men have since been detained in the Pudong New Area in connection with the thefts around Shanghai involving property and cash totaling 700,000 yuan (US$114,310).
During interviews, in which both officers and suspects wore protective masks, the men admitted to 30 burglaries in May in Putuo, Changning and Hongkou districts and 70 in Pudong since July, police said yesterday.
According to police, the men tried to claim immunity from punishment for their crimes because they were suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis.
