Shenzhen authorities have begun a crackdown on the city’s expats with shoddy visas, and arrested several for “illegal employment,” the Shenzhen Daily reports. Gone are the glory days of the $10 TEFL certificate, shady visa, and easy escape from “Loser Back Home” syndrome: Shenzhen is going legit.
The Shenzhen Daily reports:
SEVERAL foreigners who do not possess valid teaching certificates or working permits were arrested at English training centers in Nanshan District recently.
They were suspected of illegal employment and were taken away by the exit-entry management department of the Nanshan District’s Public Security Sub-bureau for further investigation, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported yesterday. […]
According to the Shenzhen Administration of Foreign Experts, about 11,000 foreigners with valid work permits were employed in Shenzhen last year, accounting for about 60 percent of the city’s foreign-worker population.
The administration said that tutoring centers must be qualified to recruit and hire foreigners as teachers, and that only 100 such organizations in the city are qualified.
