At least 10 people in Beijing attempt suicide together by drinking pesticide, in what may be a protest against the nation’s Railway Ministry, the South China Morning Post reports. Several of the individuals wore ‘Harbin Railway Bureau’ T-shirts, and their act may have been linked to the massive job cuts following the nation’s Railway Ministry restructuring in March.
Details are still sparse, and it is unclear if any of the individuals have died. The group’s suicide attempt took place on a street near Beijing’s busy West Railway Station, which adds more credence to the idea that their act may have been a form of protest related to the rail system.
China has the seventh-highest suicide rate in the world, at 22 per 100,000 people annually.
